Heavens Gate Suicide
ENCINITAS, CA - According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded to a report, (from a person who identified herself as Leslie Stahl of 60 Minutes), a woman reported to her that two men may have committed suicide at an Encinitas hotel. There, in room 222, at the Holiday Inn in Encinitas Tuesday morning, deputies found, fifty- five year old Wayne Marshal Cooke and fifty-six year old Charles Humphrey. Cooke was found dead and Humphrey unconscious, both apparent suicide victims. Humphrey was transported to Scripps Hospital, where he is in intensive care but expected to survive.
Cooke is an ex-Heavens Gate Cult member whose wife was one of the victims in Rancho Santa Fe six weeks ago, when thirty-nine cult members committed mass suicide. In fact Tuesday's suicides are very similar to the Rancho Santa Fe suicides.
