SAN DIEGO, CA - (3-28-97) Thirty-nine men and women, belonging to the group Heavens Gate, appear to have committed suicide.

. Deputies responded to 18241 Colina Norte Road in Rancho Santa Fe Wednesday afternoon. They apparently received an anonymous call telling them of a mass suicide at the residence. When officers arrived at the estate they found the victims in a very neat fashion, all laying on beds.

The following photos were released at a news conference Thursday by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators believe they died in three different groups, at three different times over the course of several days. Each group helping the other.

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner, Dr. Brian D. Blackbourne, the first autopsy reports indicate they died of an overdose of Phenobarbital mixed with alcohol.

These people left a video tape, apparently to explain why they wanted to take their own life. Twenty-one women and eighteen men died, three in their twenties, four in their thirties, twenty-one in their forties, eight in their fifties, four in their sixties and one in their seventies.
