SAN DIEGO, CA - (10-21-07) Two wildfires are burning in east San Diego County Sunday. The first, the Harris Fire, started near Harris Ranch Road and SR-94 in Potrero around 9:30am. That fire has burned more the 14,000 acres. One civilian fatality and four injured firefighters have been confirmed. The second fire, the Witch Fire, started near Highway-78 in the Santa Ysabel area around 1pm. That fire has burned more than 5000 acres.

Thousands of residents have been evacuated from both fire areas. For the Witch Fire, the community of Ramona has been evacuated. For the Harris Fire, the communities of Barrett

 

Junction, Engineer Springs, Dulzura and all areas in between have been evacuated. Evacuation centers have been set up at Steele Canyon High School, Mira Mesa High and Escondido High. Large livestock can be taken to the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds.

The following school districts will be closed on Monday: Ramona Unified School District, Poway Unified School District, Jamul-Dulzura Union School District, Dehesa School District, San Pasqual Union School District, San Pasqual High School, Steele Canyon High School, Palomar Mountain School, Vista Unified School District.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed a State of Emergency for San Diego County. The Governor is expected in San Diego on Monday.

UPDATE: - (10-22-07) Several new fires erupted overnight: San Pasqual, San Marcos, Fallbrook, Descansoas well as a fire in the Cleveland National Forest near Eagle Peak. The Witch Fire has spread as far west as I-15. Evacuation orders have been issued in Poway and Rancho Bernardo. I-15 is closed in the North County and motorists are being asked to avoid all major highways. Schools In Scripps Ranch and Mira Mesa will be closed Monday as well as UCSD.

UPDATE: - (10-22-07) Residents west of I-15, south of Del Dios Highway, north of SR-56 and east of I-5 are urged to evacuate. Qualcomm Stadium has been set up as an evacuation area.

UPDATE: - (10-22-07) San Diego police issued the following information for their employees; All SDPD on and off duty detectives (investigators) will be working in uniform today until further notice. They are to report to the headquarters building. All SDPD scheduled graveyard shift officers need to report to their commands at 6 p.m. tonight.

UPDATE: - (10-22-07) Statement from the County of San Diego: Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Rancho Santa Fe, portions of Leucadia, as well as the Olivenhain Dam area. Mandatory evacuations have also been ordered for Lakeside at 13100 Willow Rd. The Del Mar Fairgrounds are open and ready to receive evacuees. Evacuation points have been established at San Marcos High School at 1615 W. San Marcos Blvd. and Poway Civic Center at 13325 Civic Center Drive. Mira Mesa High School is now closed as it has reached capacity.

UPDATE: - (10-22-07) The Witch Fire has consumed an estimated 145,000 acres and the Harris Fire 22,000. More than 500 residences and numerous other buildings have been lost. President Bush declared a State Of Emergency for California, including San Diego County. The following communities continue to be threatened by the Witch Fire, San Diego, Poway, Ramona, Escondido, Lakeside, Valley Center, San Marcos, Rancho Santa Fe. The following communities continue to be threatened by the Harris Fire, Potrero, Barrett Junction, Barrett Lake area, Engineer Springs, Dulzura, Deerhorn Valley, Lawson Valley, Jamul, Lyons Valley area and Otay Mountain. San Diego Police issued the following evacuation orders for residents South of Del Dios Highway North of Sorrento Valley Road and West of Black Mountain Road to the ocean.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) Statement from the County of San Diego: All San Diego, Escondido, Escondido, Poway and Ramona school district schools will be closed today, along with San Diego State University, UC San Diego and the University of San Diego. Grossmont College, Cuyamaca Colleges, the Thomas Jefferson School of Law and University of Phoenix Learning Centers in downtown San Diego, Chula Vista, Kearny Mesa and San Marcos will also be closed Tuesday.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) Statement from the City of Chula Vista: Overnight, the Harris Fire continued to burn around the Northeastern boundary of Chula Vista. Parts of the communities of Bella Lago and Rolling Hills Ranch were under mandatory evacuation orders. Residents of The Woods at Eastlake, and areas of San Miguel Ranch were under a voluntary evacuation recommendation. County officials also ordered mandatory evacuations in the eastern part of Bonita/Sunnyside.

Statement from the City of San Diego: Licensed physicians and RN's with credentials are needed to relieve the current medical staff at Qualcomm Stadium. Volunteers are asked to arrive at Gate A and go to the check in table by 8:00 a.m. Shifts are expected to last from 8 to 10 hours.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) 24,992 SDG&E customers are without electricity and 1,445 customers without gas.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) Santa Ana winds are subsiding and the winds are starting to blow onshore. That is good news along the coast, but the eastern side of the fire is kicking up. The communities of Pine Valley and Julian are now being threatened. Evacuation orders have been issued for Cuyamaca, north of SR-79 and Eagle Peak in the Engineers Road area.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) Evacuees are being allowed to return home Tuesday evening in the communities of Del Mar and Olivenhein, the area south of Via de la Valle, west of Interstate 5, and north of Torrey Pines State Beach, and the area south of Beeler Canyon Road, west of Sycamore Canyon Road, east of Interstate 15 and north of MCAS Miramar. Evacuees are being allowed to return home in the area south of Twin Peaks Road East of Community Road to Tierra Bonita Road on the north and Donard Drive on the south West of Ipava Drive West and north of Poway Road.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) Classes have been canceled for all San Diego Unified School District schools.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) According to the county of San Diego, more than 500,000 people have been evacuated.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07) Statement from the County of San Diego: A mandatory evacuation notice has been issued for the Hwy 67 Corridor from Ramona to Lakeside and North Jamul. A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for an area bordered by the Sweetwater River on the north, Lawson Creek on the East and Lyons Valley Road on the south including the community of North Jamul. Evacuations have been ordered in Rancho San Diego from Del Rio Road EAST to Steele Canyon Road From Fury Lane SOUTH to Millar Ranch Road and Millar Anita Road. Evacuations have been ordered the La Jolla Reservation area, Harmony Grove and Palomar Mountain.

Statement from the City of Chula Vista: All eastern Chula Vista residents who were evacuated from their homes today and Monday night are now allowed to return to their neighborhoods.

UPDATE: - (10-23-07 9pm) Statement from the County of San Diego: Although Ramona is under mandatory evacuation orders, those residents remaining in the city are being advised to boil tap water or use bottled water for drinking and cooking until further notice. Tap water pressure should be restored around 1 a.m.
